This discussion provides detailed insights into the evolution of medical services worldwide and aims to shift the mindset of policymakers and the public toward improving Sri Lanka's health services to internationally comparable standards. These services are funded by public funds—currently 6.7% of GDP—and therefore require accountability, transparency, and effectiveness.
Developing healthcare is not about constructing mega, white-elephant infrastructure projects or importing expensive equipment. Rather, it is about improving the quality of practice by changing attitudes among both service providers and service users, and by adopting evidence-based approaches to care that minimise errors and improve outcomes. We need your voice and collaboration to make this a national civic priority. As healthcare is publicly funded, strengthening accountability is essential to raising standards and ensuring sustainable improvement.
