This enlightening discussion presented by Professor Susirith Mendi
s was an eye-opener for all of us, including the government. There is an urgent need to address these issues, which depend not only on education but also on regulation. Doctors’ service quality depends not just on education and experience but also on the regulation of their ethical practices via the Sri Lanka Medical Council. Whilst these issues are being addressed, the government should also consider setting an upper limit for private sector fees—at least classifying them into minor, intermediate, or major consultations, adjusted for accountability as well. There is a need not only to prevent burnout among medical doctors but also to prevent the exploitation of patients by various services driven by massive commercial interests. It is about time that the Sri Lankan government started addressing these issues in a balanced way, making it fair both for the service providers—the doctors—and the customers—the patients.
